| Shelby County United Way Succeeds

It’s another winner for Shelby County and the United Way. All three communities with “seated” United Way sponsored programs have topped their community goals for the annual drive. Recently Shelby/Monroe County NECAC director, Lisa Blickhan filled her Shelbyville thermometer to the top and celebrated the generosity of her community raising $1,566 for the Untied Way drive. “I’m thrilled to be $500 over goal! Lisa commented, “Our community sees all that we are doing and is willing to help support our efforts to help others.” The Shelbina campaign headed by Debra Sparks and Linda Wallace exceeded its’ goal by over $300. Dollars raised by United Way communities stay local and help programs such as the Shelby County Senior Center provide valuable services to the entire county as well as bringing needed emergency services through the Red Cross, AVENUES, Head Start... | Extension Center Goes to Four Day Week

Facing a $5,000.00 cut by Shelby County Commission for the 2012 budget, Dan Uhlmeyer, Council Chairman, called representatives to the Shelby County Extension Council together for a special meeting on Tuesday evening, February 7. The purpose for meeting was to review the budget to bring alignment between 2012 allotted funds and the 2012 projected budget. | Shelby County Presidential Primary Election Results

It was a very low turnout on Tuesday, February 7, as Shelby County voters cast their ballots at eight precincts with the great State of Missouri also casting ballots for the 2012 Presidential Primary. In Shelby County of 4,562 registered voters, only 459 or 10.06% cast their ballots. Democrats saw 129 votes cast with Barack Obama receiving 103 votes. Republicans cast 329 votes across the county with Rick Santorum receiving 187, Mitt Romney with 73, Ron Paul 33, with uncommitted receiving 14 votes as one candidate did not file the necessary paper work to appear on the ballot. Libertarian voters cast one ballot going to James Orland Ogle. Constitutional voters cast no votes in the election.

| Gaines Celebrate 50th Anniversary

Robert and Linda Patterson Gaines, Shelbyville, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on February 17. They were married February 17, 1962 at the Berea Christian Church, west of Shelbyville, with Rev. James Oliver officiating. They are the parents of one daughter, Kathy (John) Watkins, Columbia, SC; and two sons, Kent Gaines, Shelbina, and Mark Gaines (Mellany), Shelbyville. They have seven grandchildren, Callie Watkins, Carson Watkins, Chase Gaines, Chelsey Gaines, Austin Gaines, Leah Gaines and Logan Gaines.

| Eighth/Ninth Grade Trip To Washington, D.C. Will Be June 17-22

The time is now to make definite plans for the eighth and ninth grade student trip to Washington, D.C. The trip will run from June 17-22 and is open to students completing the eighth and ninth grades. If others in the community would like to go, they are welcome if there is room available. Age and slowness are not issues. Modifications have been made in the past for those who can't keep up with the energy of young people - including the tour director! Silas Stewart Silas. L. Stewart, 95, Nelsonville, died Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra. He was born April 19, 1916 in Nelsonville, MO, the son of Jehu Phillip and Amelia Mabel Iams Stewart. He married Vera Imogene Anderson on January 8, 1948 in Palmyra. She died on April 19, 2003. Graveside funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 13, at the Nelsonville Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday evening at Lewis Brothers Funeral Home in Palmyra. Ruby Loft Ruby Loft, 100, Kirksville, formerly of Clarence, died Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Kirksville Manor Care, Kirksville. She was born December 30, 1911, in Shelby County, MO, the daughter of Guy Chester and Hazel O. Reid Loft. Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 12, at the Maplewood Cemetery, Clarence. Margery Shouse Margery Ellen Shouse, 85, Shelbyville, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the Shelbina Villa, Shelbina. She was born April 23, 1926, in Bethel, MO, the daughter of Robert Lester and Mary Louisa Smoot. She married William L. (Bill) Shouse on April 23, 1946 in Bethel. He died on February 27, 2009. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 10, at the Bethel Christian Church, Bethel. Burial was in Shelby Memorial Cemetery, Shelbyville. Visitation was Thursday evening.
