The North Shelby School Board met Wednesday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library.
Superintendent’s Report
The April board meeting date was changed to April 20 at 6:30 p.m. This will be the board reorganization meeting after the April 6 election.
Kim Gaines presented information to the board about a possible “no tax” increase bond issue for the April 2022 election. Representatives from L.J. Hart & Company will be presenting options to the board at the May meeting.
TRACTION Presentation
The North Shelby TRACTION student organization made a presentation to the board about the possibility of adding a Drivers’ Education program in the 2022-23 school year at North Shelby.
Five members of the organization were present: Mary Schwanke, Adam Staples, Dani Reitz, Serenity Lee and Saryn Fox.
Schwanke and Staples gave the formal presentation which consisted of survey results from the students, reasons for the need of the program and student testimonials. Jennifer Chandler and Lisa Arment, the organization sponsors, were also present.
No decision was made by the board at this time.
High School Principal Report
Kerri Greenwell presented the board the following information:
Congratulations to Josh Hunolt and Si Presson, who will be receiving their Future Farmers of America (FFA) state degrees at the state convention this year.
In-person ag contests began on March 5.
School will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. on March 24 to hold some of the district FFA contests.
Prom will be May 8 with the grand march starting at 7 p.m. Prom will begin at 8 p.m. at the Bethel Colony Barn.
Elementary Principal Report
Monica Hinshaw presented the board the following information:
Pre-K and Kindergarten Screening was held March 1-3. Forty-three children were screened this year.
Dental varnish will take place Wednesday, March 24.
The NS elementary family has increased by two this March. Hinshaw expressed they are excited to welcome Brayson Timothy Lee Hardy and Maven Rae Minear into the world.
Chris Dimmitt is covering for Hardy’s Pre-K classroom and Jordan Baker is teaching Minear’s fourth-grade students.
New Business
The board voted to adopt the school district calendar for the 2021-22 school year. The start date for next year will be August 24. The calendar will be posted on the district’s website.
Executive Session
The board accepted the resignations of Mitch Schmidt (Vocational Agriculture), Taylor Pitford (K-12 Art) and Johnna Pantaleo (Paraprofessional/Aide). The board voted to accept a request from Jennifer Chandler (Business) to go to part-time next year.
The board also voted to expand the Science program due to larger class sizes and will be seeking a part-time Science teacher for next year, as well. Gaines posted all of these positions after the meeting.
The board voted to offer a teaching contract to Rebecca Trivette for fifth and sixth grades for the 2021-22 school year.
