The Lady Raiders second half battle earned them the victory against Westran on Tuesday, December 14, 49-39.
Just seconds into the game, junior Ceairra Kirby hit a 3-pointer. NS (2-3) took a 5-2 lead after junior Natalie Thrasher was good for two. With under four minutes on the clock NS led 8-2, after a steal and bucket made by Kirby added to the Lady Raiders lead.
“This game was a battle both mentally and physically for us,” said North Shelby head coach Landon Daniel. “We just couldn’t really get clicking all night long and made a lot of mental mistakes on both sides of the ball. That along with foul trouble meant that every girl had to really lock in and figure things out on the fly.”
The Lady Hornets went on a run scoring six points tying the game 10-10 at the end of the period.
Westran took off at the beginning of the second quarter scoring 10 points within four minutes giving them a 20-10 lead. Thrasher scored the first three points the Lady Raiders had in the period.
Thrasher scored five of North Shelby’s nine points in the second quarter. Kirby had five. Thrasher led North Shelby with 20 points and Kirby had 13.
“We challenged each other at halftime and came back out in the second half and played much better and more cohesively. Natalie Thrasher hit some big shots when we really needed it and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the FT line,” said Daniel.
Westran had a 26-10 advantage at the half.
The Lady Raiders came out hot scoring seven points within two minutes of the second half. Ava Williams and Andi Belt each claimed two and Thrasher scored a 3-pointer.
Marissa McEwen went 2-for-4 from the free throw line and NS trailed 30-28.
Thrasher’s success at the free throw line tied the game. The Lady Raiders took a 36-30 lead ending the third quarter.
In the final quarter, North Shelby added 13 points to their lead.
The junior varsity girls beat Westran in a two quarter game 12 to 8. Addy Uhlemeyer led us with six.
