North Shelby, who held the No. 1 seed in Class 1 District 11, earned its first District Title since 2006. The Raiders defeated Atlanta (No. 2) 64-57, after a battle Friday, February 25, 2022, at La Plata.
NS (19-6) was led by Brendyn McDaniel with 21 points. Seniors Carson Orr earned 19 and Landon Bender scored 10 points.
“I am super proud of the guys. We executed the game plan pretty well. We were not going to let Gilliland and Jevin White beat us, but we knew Roman (Phillips) would. The kids bought into defense and have done that all year. It was fun tonight,” said NS head coach Landon Daniel.
Just a minute into the game McDaniel splashed in a 3-pointer and Orr followed with a bucket. Orr went 1-for-2 from the free throw line giving NS a 6-0 advantage. McDaniel scored the next five points for the Raiders earning them a seven-point lead. North Shelby’s JD Rich went 1-for-2 from the line and senior Kyle Smith claimed a bucket.
Atlanta’s Jason Viers scored 10 points for the Hornets within the first five minutes. Atlanta tied the game at 14 after Landon Gilliland scored four points with a little over a minute on the clock. Orr went 2-for-2 at the FT line and earned a bucket giving NS an 18-14 advantage.
Viers scored the first bucket in the second quarter. Just 30 seconds later, McDaniel earned a 3-point play. Atlanta was down 21-17 after Jevin White scored. Bender went 2-for-2 from the FT line and NS had a 23-17 lead.
The Raiders took a 12-point lead after Casey Shockley hit a 3-pointer and Orr scored four. Roman Phillips claimed a bucket, but the Hornets trailed by 10. Rich scored the next two points for NS. Gilliland and Viers each scored within 20 seconds apart.
McDaniel went 2-for-2 from the FT line. Viers scored the last bucket for Atlanta in the first half. Bender claimed a bucket with 35 seconds on the clock. North Shelby held a 38-26 advantage at halftime.
Gilliland hit a shot within seven seconds into the third period. McDaniel put in a shot. Phillips earned the next two buckets for Atlanta and Viers claimed one. The Hornets trailed 40-35.
McDaniel and Orr each claimed two points giving NS a 10-point lead. With 3:58 on the clock Jaron Peavler went 2-for-2 from the line. North Shelby senior Noah Greenwell was good for a bucket. Bender splashed in a shot from beyond the arch. Atlanta claimed the next six points in the game, but Raiders held a 50-44 advantage going into the final period.
Orr scored 10 seconds into the fourth. McDaniel went 1-for-2 from the FT line. Just eight seconds later, Viers was successful at the line. Rich earned a bucket, and he was followed by White. Bender extended the Raiders lead after putting in a shot during an inbound play. NS held a 58-50 lead.
Orr claimed the next four NS points. Atlanta went 4-for-6 from the line within two minutes and Gilliland claimed a bucket. Atlanta trailed 62-57 with a 1:35 left in the game. McDaniel scored the last two points for NS after being successful at the line.
