By Marlana Smith
Chris Parsons has been hired to coach the North Shelby Varsity girls team in 2022-23’ along with teaching junior high math and Algebra II.
Below are questions and responses via email.
Why did you decide to take the position at North Shelby?
After a couple of seasons off and missing the game of basketball terribly it was time to search. When an opportunity opened at North Shelby, I got the feeling right off that it was the right fit. I know how important education is here, how much the parents support every aspect of NS and knowing Coach Daniel had this program heading for big things left no doubt.
What is your background in education/coaching?
I taught 15 years in Sedalia. Grade 1, grade 5 and middle school math. I have taught the past 10 years in Palmyra, grade 4 and 7-8 math. I have been a head basketball coach for 15 seasons. Eight years in Palmyra, five at Sedalia and two at Green Ridge.
How long did you coach basketball at Palmyra? What was your record there?
I was the head coach in Palmyra for eight seasons with a record of 171-48.
Have you coached any other sports?
I have coached girls and boys golf with boys winning a State title here last season. I have also coached HS track, MS football and MS basketball.
What are some accomplishments you’ve made as a coach?
I have been named Coach of the Year at conference and district levels. We reached two elite 8’s in Palmyra, as well as, multiple District titles. Most importantly, the relationships are what I cherish over my years as a coach.
Is coaching basketball a passion you’ve always had?
Yes, most definitely!! I remember as a high school player at North Shelby coaching some of the youth and helping at camps. I knew at that point, this was my path.
What do you hope to bring to the program?
Honestly, I hope to build on what’s already in place. It’s not a rebuild and Landon has us in a great spot. I hope to come in and work individually on skills and adding a bit of new style of play, but use what’s in place. I promise we will outwork anyone around and believe each night we will compete at a high level.
What would you like the community to know about you?
Born and raised a Raider and look forward to being back. I have been married 22 years to my wife, Sarah. I have three daughters. Reigan, 20, a student at UCM, Taytum, 16, a sophomore and Finley, 11, a sixth grade. I am looking forward to this opportunity and working hard to continue to make this area proud.
Other comments?
I look forward to being involved in the community and continuing to prepare these students/athletes for years to come. Thanks to everyone who has reached and made me feel welcome. I can’t wait to get started.
