Mildred Joyce Mayes, 92, of Shelbina, Mo., passed away Sunday, April 10, 2022 at Clarence Care Center.
Joyce was born on July 24, 1929, in Lakenan, the daughter of Albert Ross and Mildred (Cochrane) Metcalf. She was united in marriage to James Thomas “JT” Mayes on June 26, 1949 at Oakdale. He preceded her in death on August 5, 2001.
She is survived by three daughters, Melissa Clarke (Lane) of Columbia, Kimberly Ann Smith of Bevier and Mary Beth Burch of Newark; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Wilson, Jamie Smith, Justin Clarke, Lindsey Smith, Allison Thompson, Elise Burch, Eli Burch and Evan Burch; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Thomas Mayes; daughter, Lucinda Jo Haden (Clyde); siblings, Faye Brewer, Mary Jo Weaver, Joan Newman and Clyde Metcalf.
Joyce was a member of Shelbina United Methodist Church where she had volunteered in many capacities including Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She was awarded the Conference Special Mission Recognition from the United Methodist Church Women for her leadership with the back to school program. Joyce was a country schoolteacher and later taught pre-school in her home. She went on to work as a secretary in Clarence for over 25 years. Joyce was a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, aunt, teacher, and so much more. She was happy with little and grateful always. Joyce had an attitude of gratitude and her loving kindness toward others will leave a lasting impact. She loved the Lord and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 1 pm to 2 p.m. at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina. Funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Shelbina Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shelbina United Methodist Church.
