Raiders Fall Short to Canton Tigers, McDaniel Scores 1000th Career Point

The North Shelby Raiders lost the fight against Canton, 49-45, on Friday, January 13, 2023.
Senior Brendyn McDaniel scored his 1000th career point with a 3-pointer with 2:01 on the clock in the first quarter.
Beginning the game, McDaniel was only three points away from his 1000th.
“Four years of great basketball, you got to love a kid like that. He is one of those kids who is one of the first in the gym and I usually have to run him out after practice.
“Every Saturday he wants me to open the gym and he got rewarded for his hard work and four years of dedication to our varsity program,” said Head Coach Cody Stoneburner.
Canton took a 5-0 lead with 5:18 on the clock. Gabe Orr was the first Raider to score in the game. NS only tallied eight points in the quarter. The Tigers led 11-5 until McDaniel hit a three pointer.
JD Rich led North Shelby (5-8) with 16 points and McDaniel had 11.
“The boys played really hard. A lot of people may not know this, but Canton is playing as good as anybody right now,” said Stoneburner.
“They’ve got some really quality wins in the last couple weeks.”
Canton’s Kyle Frazier claimed five of the 13 points the Tigers had in the quarter.
The second period was a fight. NS tallied 18 points while Canton earned 14.
McDaniel splashed in a three and NS only trailed 17-11.
JD Rich hit a three and Clay Cook was good for the bucket and drew the foul. He was not successful for the three-point play. Rich’s bucket tied the game with 3:27 left in the first half.
Frazier’s two bucket’s gave Canton back the lead, 22-18.
Casey Shockley scored for North Shelby with 1:41 on the clock.
With 42.8 seconds on the clock Preston Brewer was fouled and sent to the line. Canton took a 24-20 lead.
Rich was good for the bucket and drew the foul. Rich earned the three-point play. NS trailed 24-23. Canton held a 27-26 lead at halftime.
Orr’s bucket allowed NS to have a one-point lead starting the third quarter.
Brewer went 2-for-2 from the charity line and the Tigers took back the lead.
With 5:53 North Shelby held the advantage, 30-29. Brewer’s bucket allowed them to take a two-point lead.
Cook’s three pointer allowed North Shelby to take back the lead. Rich hit a bucket and the Raiders lead extended, 38-35 with 1:45 left in the third period.
Fraizer hit a bucket and he was followed by Kaden Oliver. The Tigers led 39-38. Rich’s appearance at the charity line tied the game.
“The boys were saying in the locker room they felt like a real team tonight. They were all gelling together. They played like it too,” said Stoneburner.
The fourth quarter wasn’t high scoring for either team.
Jade Daniel hit a bucket within a minute into the quarter.
Rich and McDaniel were the only other Raiders to score in the quarter. They each claimed two points.
