South Shelby (15-2, ranked fourth in Missouri Girls Class 3) ran the table at the 34th Annual North Shelby Tournament, winning the girls’ championship by a 62-41 margin over Cairo (15-2, ranked third in Girls Class 2). Injuries and illness likely played a role in the January 16-21, 2023 tournament outcome.
Fourth seeded, and fifth ranked in Class 2 girls Schuyler County (13-3) won their first round game 65-35 over Scotland County. South Shelby got past the Lady Rams, who played without North Central Missouri CC bound Jacie Morris by a 59-38 semifinal margin then lost to sixth ranked in Class 1 North Shelby (14-3) in the third place game by a 52-39 final.
Scotland County (6-8) downed La Plata by a 46-28 final in the girl’s consolation championship game. KC lost to top seeded South Shelby 67-17 in first round girls’ action. Scotland County topped the Lady Eagles 51-35 in the semifinal round.
South Shelby’s boys had a good run. The Cardinals (8-10) downed Schuyler by a 37-29 final in the boy’s championship game. Top seeded Cairo (11-6) was knocked off by South Shelby by a 65-58 tally in the semifinals.
Cairo bested North Shelby (6-9) by a 76-27 final in the boys’ third place game. The Raiders played without guard JD Rich much of the tournament due to injury.
Fourth seeded South Shelby downed fifth seeded Knox County (7-9) by a 70-48 first round final score. The Eagles downed La Plata by a 63-25 semifinal score. KC topped conference rival Scotland County 52-30 for the boys’ consolation championship.
Scotland County beat Marion County 54-48 in the consolation semifinals after bowing to second seeded Schuyler County in the boy’s first round.
