Lady Birds Lose to QND

The South Shelby Lady Birds hosted the Quincy Notre Dame Lady Raiders of Quincy, Ill., on Thursday, January 25, 2024, which was originally scheduled for January 12 but was postponed because of inclement weather. The Lady Birds lost 53-40.

The Lady Birds quickly jumped out ahead early in the game with a 6-2 lead after layups from Belle Roush and Callie McWilliams. QND quickly responded with a 10-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. The Lady Raiders maintained the lead and led 15-10 after the first quarter.

South Shelby battled back in the second quarter and took a lead of 16-15 on free throws by McWilliams. Kamryn Mitchell followed with two more free throws to give the Lady Birds an 18-15 lead with 4:04 left in the first half.

The two teams traded baskets and QND regained the lead and led 27-24 at the half.

The Lady Raiders took control of the game to open the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the third quarter to build a 38-24 lead with 3:43 left in the quarter.

South Shelby’s first points of the third quarter came with 2:37 left when Belle Roush made two free throws. The Lady Birds closed the third quarter on a 8-4 clip to cut the lead to 42-32 after three quarters.

Mitchell opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer to cut the lead to 42-35, but that was as close as the Lady Birds would get the rest of the night. QND went on a 9-1 run to lock up the victory and win 53-40.

Belle Roush led the Lady Birds in scoring with 15 points. McWilliams finished with six assists and three steals.

The Lady Birds dropped to 14-4 overall.
