Donald Joe Schofield

8/6/1943 – 2/6/2024

Donald Joe Schofield of Columbia, Mo., went to be with his Heavenly Father on February 6, 2024, at University Hospital. He was born on August 6, 1943, in Shelbyville, Mo., the son of Harold and Katie (Ridge) Schofield. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Wetzel on August 5, 1973. Don is survived by his sister, Emmalynn (Noble Lee) Hawkins of Bethel, Mo., and brother, Harold Dean (Judy) Schofield of Madison, Wisc. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Killebrew; and his brother, Bob Schofield.

Don’s family moved from Shelby County to Boone County when Don was in the 8th grade. He graduated from Hallsville High School in 1961 and from the University of Missouri in 1966 with a degree in Agricultural Mechanization and Economics. Upon graduation, he was drafted into the Army and spent the next two years mainly at Ft. Belvoir in Va., where he was an instructor in the Heavy Equipment Division.

Don worked his way through college by helping build houses. After returning from military duty, his passion for building became his life’s work. Don especially enjoyed the creative aspect of crafting every home specific to the owner’s wishes, specializing in custom touches to make each unique. His skills in applied geometry were evident in roof and ceiling angles, skylights, decks, arches, staircases, indoor atriums, and balconies. Even with age, Don never “retired.” Instead, he continued to freely share his creativity and knowledge in helping friends with home building and repair needs.

Don shared his strong faith through serving in church leadership and in building projects that included a church and a Christian Campus House at MU. Don felt blessed by the help of many faithful volunteers and the camaraderie they shared in these missions. Helping serve meals at the annual Christian Campus House Spring Retreat gave Don wonderful memories and lifelong friends.

Don treasured family time including frequent family reunions, lunches at Culvers, attending school and sports events of grandsons, family trips, and often just sharing stories around a bonfire.

Don is survived by his wife Marilyn and their three children, Kara (Andrew) Novinger of Nixa, Mo., Matthew (Dana) Schofield of Jefferson City, Mo., and Kristin (Jacob) Curle of Henderson, Ky., and four grandchildren, Zane Novinger, Alton Novinger, Brock Schofield, and Weston Schofield.

Services for Don were on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, Mo. Visitation at 12:00 pm, and funeral services at 1:00 pm.
