Larry Gene Patterson

Larry Gene Patterson, 86 and formerly of Shelbyville, passed away on January 17, 2024 in Stockton, California.  Larry was born March 7, 1937 in Kirksville, Missouri, the son of Daniel and Laverne Patterson.

Larry was husband to his beloved wife Karen Patterson (Stehr) for 48 years until she passed in 2019.   He is survived by three children, Kelly Taylor of Lodi, California, Karry (Efran) Colon of Stockton, California and his son Blaine (Elizabeth) Patterson of Haverford, Pennsylvania; grandchildren Robert, Brittany, Leslie, Nicole, and William; seven great-grandchildren; and beloved sister, Linda Gaines (Robert) of Shelbyville and brother Daniel (Dorothy) Patterson of Forrest Lake, Minnesota. Larry also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews and their spouses and children.  He was preceded in passing by sister Joyce (Don) Kingsley and son-in-law Bruce Taylor.

Larry grew up in Shelbyville and the Peoria, Illinois area, enlisting in the US Navy after high school.  A Vietnam veteran, he deployed multiple times to the Asia Pacific region and retired as a Gunner’s Mate First Class after over 22 years of active duty and reserve service.  After his Navy career, Larry owned a barber shop for several years in Peoria and retired from the US Postal Service. He later returned to live in Shelbyville in 2016 until relocating near family in California in 2019.

A passionate fisherman, Larry was also an avid golfer and loved working on houses and creating things.  He was generous with his time and efforts, whether to charity or a neighbor in need. His greatest love, however, was for his family and the time spent with them. His warmth and endless sense of humor is already greatly missed.

Memorial services to be held at a later date. Donations in Larry’s memory can be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
