The North Shelby School Board gathered for their monthly meeting Wednesday, November 17, with all members present. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. The agenda was approved 7-0.
Student/Staff Recognition:
The FFA Conduct of Chapter Meetings team and Mr. Eckler were formally recognized before the board for winning first in the nation at the National FFA Convention. The team members were Andi Belt, Austin Wilson, Sadie Copenhaver, Marissa McEwen, Aliza Yoder, Fady Fransis, Jacie Cook, Whitney Snow, Riley Stoneburner and Aiden Johnston. Each team member received a Certificate of Excellence from board president, Scot Shively.
Consent Agenda:
The previous month’s meeting minutes and bills were approved 7-0.
Superintendent’s Report:
Kim Gaines reported on the board filing dates—December 7 – December 28. The specific times and dates will be published in the Shelby County Herald. Gaines also reminded the board about the board refresher training that must be completed yearly. The Missouri Association of Rural Education has sent the updated training link to Gaines.
Gaines also discussed the ESSR III funding the district is slated to receive. Before the state can disburse this money to school districts, the state legislature must approve receipt of the funds from the federal government. The deadline for this to occur is March 24, 2022. Gaines informed the board that these funds are not included in this year’s budget at this time.
High School Principal Report
Kerri Greenwell provided the following information to the board:
This year’s dual credit enrollment includes 22 students enrolled in 42 courses adding up to 128 college credits for first semester. Second semester’s enrollment is 20 students in 38 courses adding up to 116 college credits.
Congratulations to the following Raiders for receiving Central Rivers Conference honors: 1st Team DB – Robert Uhlmeyer and Carson Orr, 1st Team LB – Noah Greenwell and Kyle Smith, 1st Team DL – Justin Lunsford, 1st Team QB – Cale Stoneburner, 1st Team RB – Justin Lunsford, 1st Team OL – Luke Schwanke, Honorable Mention DL – Luke Schwanke, Honorable Mention APD – Cale Stoneburner, Honorable Mention WR – Landon Bender, Honor Mention OL – Brayton Cook and Dylan McEwen.
Congratulations to Mary Schwanke and Ava Williams for placing first individually at Area 3 Fall Public Speaking. Also, congratulations to Williams for winning first at the District Public Speaking Contest. Williams will compete at State in December.
Elementary Principal Report
Jennifer Rich provided the following information to the board:
Kelly McEwen, Haley Hardy, Holly Klusmeyer and myself attended a PAT supervisory meeting at South Shelby on October 20.
Kelly McEwen and Mendy Schaffer hosted a PAT Costume Carnival at North Shelby on October 26. They had a wonderful turnout of 40
children.
Hope Parsons started as a Para on Monday, November 1.
North Shelby hosted a MLDS Coaching Lab for my principal’s cohort. We had a group of nine that worked on observations and went into a couple of teacher’s classrooms in the elementary.
New Business:
In new business, the final budget for 21-22 was approved (7-0), and the school calendar was amended to cancel school December 10 for the Norm Stewart Classic Basketball Tournament (7-0). Gaines explained this day may have to be made up later in the year if the district has to utilize all the built-in hours due to winter weather. The varsity boys’ team and the band have been invited to participate. The boys play at 10 a.m., and the band will perform at halftime of the game. This game will also be televised on ESPNU, and the school will be part of a feature on Norm Stewart.
Executive Session:
In executive session, the board voted to accept the resignations/retirements of Kim McEwen – food service director, and Roxie Stoneburner—elementary secretary.
