Lady Birds Defeat Macon and Mark Twain, Lose to Palmyra

The South Shelby Lady Birds hosted Macon on Monday, September 18, 2023, and won 4-1, winning its first conference game of the season.
The Lady Birds took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kamryn Mitchell reached base on a dropped third strike, and eventually came around to score on a passed ball.
Macon tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, but the Lady Birds responded in the bottom half. Callie McWilliams walked and advanced to third on a bunt by Madison Wilt and error by the fielder. She scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball and South Shelby led 2-1 after four innings.
The Lady Birds added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, all with two outs in the inning. Kylie Million walked and Mitchell reached on an error. With Sofia Eleazarraraz batting, Million scored on a wild pitch. Eleazararraz walked and Mitchell scored on a wild pitch with McWilliams batting. South Shelby led 4-1 after five innings, which would be the final.
The Lady Birds were held to just two hits but took advantage of several Macon errors and wild pitches.
Cassidy Curtis pitched seven innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits, while striking out three batters.
South Shelby traveled to Palmyra on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, and lost 11-8.
Wilt doubled in the top of the second inning and later scored on a groundout to give the Lady Birds an early 1-0 lead.
Palmyra responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lady Birds bounced back in the top of the third inning. Eleazarraraz singled, followed by a double by McWilliams. Eleazarraraz stole home, followed by an RBI single by Wilt and South Shelby trailed 4-3 heading to the bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Panthers rallied to score four runs and build the lead to 8-3.
With the Lady Birds trailing 9-3 in the top of the fifth inning, Wilt connected on an RBI triple to make it 9-4.
Palmyra added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but South Shelby mounted a rally in the next half inning. Larissa Larrick led off with a double, followed by a walk to Harlie Fuller. Three batters later, Million singled to drive in one run. Mitchell followed with an RBI bunt single, and Eleazarraraz added an RBI single, and the Lady Birds had closed the gap to 10-8.
Palmyra added its final run in the bottom of the sixth inning and closed out the win against Soutth Shelby.
Wilt led the offense with three hits, including a double and triple. She had one runs scored and two RBIs. Eleazarraraz and McWilliams each added two hits.
McWilliams pitched six innings, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits. She walked seven and struck out seven batters.
On Wednesday, September 20, the Lady Birds hosted Mark Twain and won 13-3 in six innings.
South Shelby scored four first inning runs, highlighted by an RBI triple by Eleazarraraz and a two-run single by Larrick.
The Lady Birds led 5-2 heading to the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Fuller singled and Million walked. Both would later score on errors. The scoring in the inning was capped off when McWilliams singled to score two more runs. The Lady Birds led 9-2 after three innings.
South Shelby added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Larrick and Bella Cook. The Lady Birds led 12-3 after four innings.
The Lady Birds scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Allie Wharton, a pinch runner, scored from third on a steal of home. It ended the game for the Lady Birds with a 13-3 win.
McWilliams, Mitchell, Wilt, Larrick, and Cook each had two hits for the Lady Birds. Larrick added three RBIs.
Curtis pitched six innings, allowing three runs, two earned runs, on nine hits. She walked three and struck out five batters.
