The South Shelby Cardinals hosted the North Platte Panthers for Homecoming night at South Shelby High School on Friday, October 4, 2024. The Cardinals won the game 38-0 to keep its perfect season intact.
South Shelby started on offense after Payton Hetheriton returned the kickoff 39 yards to the North Platte 35-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Chase Moellering connected with Preston Elsen over the middle for a 35-yard touchdown. The extra point kick by Pedro Romanichen was good and the Cardinals led 7-0 less than a minute into the game.
North Platte punted on its first possession and the Cardinals moved the ball to the 26-yard line, but the field goal attempt was blocked.
The Panthers moved the ball down the field to the 18-yard line in Cardinals territory, but the pass attempt was intercepted by Elsen in the end zone to give the Cardinals a touchback.
On South Shelby’s next possession, the Cardinals used seven plays to drive 80 yards and score on a 23-yard touchdown run by Pryce Eagan. The extra point kick was no good and the Cardinals led 13-0 with 10:49 left in the second quarter.
The Cardinals started its next drive, after another punt by North Platte, on its own 24-yard line. Eagan rushed for 13, yards, followed by Moellering running for 20 yards. On the third play, Moellering completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Owen Stueve. The two-point conversion pass from Moellering to Stueve was also good, and the Cardinals led 21-0 with 7:46 left in the first half.
The Cardinals led 21-0 at the half with the Panthers starting the second half with the ball. The South Shelby defense forced a punt and gave the ball back to the offense. The Cardinals used six plays to score again. The drive ended with a four-yard touchdown run by Elsen. The extra point kick by Romanichen was good and the lead was 28-0 with 6:33 left in the third quarter.
Another turnover on downs gave the ball back to the Cardinals. A fake punt run of 34 yards by Hetheriton set up South Shelby for another score. On the next play, Elsen scored on a 16-yard touchdown run. The extra point kick by Romanichen was good and the lead was 35-0 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
The final score of the night came in the fourth quarter when Romanichen kicked a 27-yard field goal to give the Cardinals a 38-0 lead with 10:05 left in the game.
Moellering completed 6-of-7 passes for 135 yards, including two touchdown passes.
Moellering also rushed for 70 yards on six carries.
Eagan rushed for 63 yards, including a touchdown, on eight carries. Hetheriton finished with 56 yards on five carries, while Elsen added 40 yards, including a touchdown, on eight carries.
Stueve caught two passes for 75 yards and one touchdown. Elsen added a 35-yard touchdown pass.
The Cardinals, 6-0 overall, will host Centralia on Friday, October 11, 2024, with the game beginning at 7 p.m.
