On April 23rd at 8:30 am South Shelby FFA members would start what would soon be a very successful week at the 97th Missouri State FFA Convention. Wednesday morning teams Nursery Landscape, Agronomy, Livestock, and Dairy Foods had a long day of competing. Nursery Landscape and Agronomy were both awarded one of the top 10 teams in the state. In addition to that, Lindsey Magruder, Lillie Broughton, Peyson Larrick, Louis Strayhorn, and Caden Stevenson all received group 1 ratings meaning they were in the top 25 percent in their contest. Wednesday night, members attended the first general session not knowing what was about to happen. Students Sophie Dovin and Maicyn Ratliff made their way on to the stage where it was announced South Shelby FFA chapter placed number one gold rated chapter in the state of Missouri. Students sitting in the crowd were heard for miles with their excitement! This is a great honor for the chapter to receive. It took lots of hard work, dedication, and member involvement to achieve such a high reward. After that very eventful session kids loaded the bus to arguably the best stop all week, Texas Roadhouse, where the FFA rewarded members for making it to the state level with a nice steak dinner!
Thursday started bright and early for members on teams Dairy Cattle, Food Science, and Lindsey Magruder in Advanced Speaking who competed for most of the day. Jace McWilliams, Colt Threlkeld, and Bella Gill all received group 1 individuals in their event. While those members were hard at work, others were playing mini golf and riding go carts at Midway! Meanwhile Harlie Fuller and Lindsey Magruder, attend the business session to vote on new policy coming into FFA. Students then headed to the two o’clock session where Callie McWilliams was awarded the State Fair scholarship. Members then grabbed a quick bite and then made their way to the next session. In this session Maicyn Ratliff and Callie McWilliams were awarded for their proficiencies. Maicyn was awarded with the area winner in the Small Animal Production and Care proficiency category. Callie was awarded with the area winner and state runner up in Sheep Production proficiency category. As soon as the session was over members went back to the hotel, doordashed food, and dreaded that the last day of state convention was coming so quickly.
Friday, April 25th was the final day of convention. Members started the day off at the career fair, where they gained knowledge on options for their future education and career opportunities. Students made it to the last session where the six members Callie McWilliams, Shelby Buckman, Sophie Dovin, Maicyn Ratliff, Axel Jackson, and Christopher Roush were recognized for all their hard work and received their state degrees. The 97th Missouri State Convention was definitely one for the books!
