Cardinals Defeat Monroe City in First Round of District Tournament

The South Shelby Cardinals used an eight run second inning to propel them to a 15-5 first round district win against Monroe City on Thursday, May 15, 2025, in the district tournament at Macon High School.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Owen Stueve and a bases loaded walk to Keegan Kendrick.
Monroe City responded with three runs in the top of the second inning, but the lead was short lived as the Cardinals erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Gage Timbrook led off the inning with a triple and later scored on an RBI single by John Schmidt to tie the game.
An error by Monroe City gave South Shelby a 4-3 lead, which was followed by an RBI single by Kendrick. A bases loaded walk to Caleb Scheiterle and an RBI single by Cooper Elsen gave the Cardinals a 7-3 lead. The final three runs of the inning came across on a dropped third strike allowing the batter to reach first base, a single by Schmidt, and a stolen base of home by Cooper Elsen. South Shelby led 10-3 after two innings.
South Shelby scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Scheiterle and Timbrook, to win the game 15-5 in five innings.
Schmidt and Timbrook led the Cardinals with three hits each. Schmidt added three RBIs.
Tucker Elliott pitched five innings to pick up the win. He allowed five runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out four batters.
