The South Shelby Middle School Lady Birds defeated the Moberly Lady Spartans 47-13 in the first round of the Monroe City Middle School Basketball tournament on Monday, December 15, 2025.
South Shelby started quick, scoring 18 in the first quarter and 14 in the second quarter to take a commanding lead, 32-6.
The Lady Birds had one of their best shooting nights, hitting jumper after jumper and playing great defense along the way.
“Kids shot well, hitting shots against the man defense. We haven’t seen lots of man defense this year, so it was fun to play against. Good defense again tonight, shared the ball really well also,” said Coach Kevin Mitchell.
Leading the Lady Birds in scoring was McKinnley Webb with 12 points, Keagan Barton with nine points, Myra McWilliams with eight points, Skylar Buckman with six points, and Brinlee Gill with four points. Rounding out the scoring for South Shelby were Jessa Maupin, Bentleigh Lanpher, Hadley Seaton, Naomi Cohn with two points apiece.
South Shelby was led in rebounding by Webb with nine and Barton with four rebounds. Webb and Lanpher led South Shelby in steals with four.
The Lady Birds got payback last Thursday night in the second round of the tournament, defeating the Holy Rosary Lady Trojans 39-30. The only blemish on the Lady Bird record was a loss to Holy Rosary in the SSMS tournament championship.
South Shelby led at the half 19-15 after a quick start in the first quarter. Good defense and timely shooting helped the Lady Birds outscore Holy Rosary 20-15 in the second half.
“Girls wanted this game really bad! Proud of their effort, executed the game plan perfectly, and just played hard. Could have panicked in the fourth quarter when Holy Rosary made a run but kept their composure and got it done”, said Coach Mitchell.
Webb led with 20 points, followed by McWilliams with 13, Barton with four, and Shaw with two points. The Lady Birds were led in rebounds by Webb with 14, Shaw with five, and McWilliams with four.
The Lady Birds won the tournament championship 30-22 over the Palmyra Lady Panthers last Friday night, December 19, 2025, in a high-level middle school basketball game.
Palmyra jumped out quickly, outscoring South Shelby by six early, but the Lady Birds didn’t panic and got within a point at the end of the first quarter.
An intense second quarter saw the Lady Birds take the lead in a seesaw battle, 14-13 at the half.
In a game where every rebound and drive to the basket was physically contested, the Lady Birds held tough, played great defense, and hit shots when they were most needed.
With South Shelby up one after three quarters, 20-19, the Lady Birds hit three key jumpers that kept the lead for good and held on in a crazy last three minutes to get the win, 30-23.
