Voters Pass Ambulance District Tax Levy

Shelby County voters weighed in on school board elections, city contests and a countywide ambulance question during the April 7 General Municipal Election. There were 602 ballots cast out of 4,204 registered voters for a turnout of 14.32%.
In the North Shelby school board race, Shawn McEwen had 238 votes, followed by Travis Belt with 223 and Joshlin Yoder with 213. James Kohn received 54 votes. Three board members were elected.
Shelby County voters approved the Salt River Ambulance question. The measure received 302 yes votes and 280 no votes. The question was, “Shall the Board of Directors of the Salt River Ambulance District be authorized to levy an additional sales tax of one-half of one percent, bringing the total sales tax to one percent in order to provide for continued sufficient funds to operate the district, provided that the total property tax levy on property within the district shall continue to be reduced annually by an amount which is equal to fifty percent of the previous year’s sales tax revenue collected by the District?”
Walter Spilker was elected Salt River Ambulance Board Director from Subdistrict 1 with 140 votes, while Lyle P. Leatherman was elected from Subdistrict 4 with 23 votes.
In the Salt River Nursing Home Board races, L. Sam Hawkins Jr. won Subdistrict 3 with 48 votes. In Subdistrict 2, the report listed two write-in votes for Kathy Lackey.
In the City of Shelbina, Al Dimmitt was elected Mayor with 106 votes, and Jeff Brown was elected City Marshal with 106 votes. Nick Broughton won the East Ward Alderman seat with 43 votes. In the West Ward race, Chad Wharton defeated Adam Johnston by a 51-24 margin.
In Clarence, Willie Hendricks was elected Mayor with 58 votes.
In the alderman race, Dennis Williams received 43 votes, Jackie Blackford had 41 and Myrna I. Carothers received 37. Two seats were to be filled.
In the City of Shelbyville, Michael D. Vanskike was elected mayor with 67 votes. Rob Southers won the North Ward Alderman race with 24 votes over Daniel Dunn’s nine. Gene Boyles was elected South Ward Alderman with 36 votes. Shelbyville voters also approved a local ballot question by a 54-16 margin.
Jon Miles led the Village of Bethel trustee race with 31 votes, followed by Laura Claus with 28 and Joey Buckman with 21. Patricia Truitt received seven votes. Three trustee positions were to be filled.
In the Lewis County C-I school board race, Jake Hedgs received seven votes, Michael Scoggin had six, and both John Sparks Jr. and Allen L. Brinkley had three. Donna Reid had no votes listed.
In the Monroe City R-1 school board race, Mechele Ogle received six votes, Jennifer Hinds and John E. Long each had five, and Tyler Mudd had three.
