NS Drops Close One to Gophers

The North Shelby Raiders hosted Green City, January 6. The Raiders fell short 72-64.

“Tough loss against a very athletic team. Their defensive pressure gave us trouble all night long and even though at times we looked really good against it and scored on crisp passing, there were too many times that we were sloppy against it with our passing and trying to dribble through it,” said North Shelby coach Landon Daniel.

NS came out with the lead in the first quarter, 18-14.

Daniel said the Raiders struggled too many times in the lane and had bad or weak finishes.

“We’ve got to do a better job of finishing at the rim and shooting the ball when we get it to the paint. We try and make an unnecessary pass instead of just taking the ball up for a shot,” said Daniel.

The Gophers tallied 19 points in the second quarter which allowed them to take a 36-31 halftime lead.

Despite North Shelby scoring 33 points in the second half, Green City was able to maintain its lead with an additional 39 points.

Daniel said, “The guys played their guts out and never quit and had multiple opportunities to get back in the game.”

Cale Stoneburner tallied 14 points for the Raiders. Dayton Mettes contributed 12.
