Varsity track coach Renee Shinn looks forward to her fifth season at North Shelby. Shinn is assisted by Bridgett Bass.
Returning track athlete and senior, Noah Greenwell, brings experience, leadership as a student athlete, especially with the javelin.
Senior Justin Lunsford is new to varsity track. Coach Shinn believes he will bring leadership as a student athlete along with enthusiasm. Shinn said Lunsford is quick on the track for the 4×100 relay.
Luke Schwanke, senior, is new to track as well. He will also run the 4×100 relay. Shinn said Schwanke brings leadership along with being a good thrower.
NS senior Robert Uhlmeyer will also take part in 4×100 relay as he is quick. Along with the other three seniors, Uhlmeyer brings leadership as an athlete.
All seniors but Schwanke will be playing baseball.
The 18 track members began practice February 28. They have been blessed with good weather to get outside and practice on the track and field which has allowed for good conditioning.
Throwers have received guidance from Clint Prange, Donnie Williams and Coach David Stuckey. Sprinters have been busy with block work and hurdles. Long and triple jumpers have worked with Coach Bass a good amount of time.
Shinn said each athlete has set individual goals which consist of improving stamina in running, sectional and state competition, throwing 100ft (30.5m) in discus, breaking school records, placing in javelin in at least five meets and jump 33ft (10.06m) in the triple.
“A team goal as a coach I have is to see improvement in each student athlete while seeing confidence and happiness in them,” said Coach Shinn.
