Cardinals Defeat Macon, Set Up Showdown with Centralia

A 42-0 win at Macon for the South Shelby Cardinals sets up a big Clarence Cannon Conference matchup with the Centralia Panthers on Friday, October 13. Both teams enter the matchup with undefeated records of 7-0.
The Cardinals used a big first half to seal the win early and coast in the second half to the win against the Tigers.
Macon started with the ball and fumbled on the first play of the game, setting up the South Shelby offense at the Macon 27-yard line.
South Shelby took advantage of the mistake and scored on the fifth play from scrimmage with a 17-yard touchdown run by Cameron Wiseman. The two-point conversion by Kendal Hammond was good and the Cardinals led 8-0 with 9:30 left in the first quarter.
Macon punted the ball on its next possession, but a facemask penalty by the Tigers gave the Cardinals an additional 15 yards. South Shelby started its next drive on its own 41-yard line.
On the first play of the drive, Hammond rushed straight up the middle for a 59-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion by Hammond was good and the Cardinals led 16-0 with 5:34 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers went three plays and out on its next possession, but the Cardinals couldn’t take advantage as they ended up fumbling the ball back to Macon at the 14-yard line.
Another punt by Macon gave the ball to the Cardinals at its own 22 yard line. On the fifth play of the drive, Wiseman ran for a 47-yard gain to put the ball at the Macon 18-yard line. Hammond took the handoff on the next play and went 18 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and the lead was 22-0 with 8:30 left in the first half.
Macon fumbled on its first play of the next possession, which was recovered by Chance Rainey, giving the ball to South Shelby on the Macon 26-yard line. Quarterback Chase Moellering completed a 26-yard pass to Wiseman for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The extra point kick was no good and the Cardinals led 28-0 with 8:06 left in the first half.
Another turnover by Macon, this time an interception Owen Stueve, gave the ball back to South Shelby. The Cardinals didn’t waste any time as Hammond took the handoff and went 31 yards for a touchdown. The extra point failed, and the Cardinals led 34-0 with 7:02 in the second quarter.
Macon punted on its next possession giving South Shelby the ball at its own 27 yard line.
On the second play from scrimmage, Hammond ran for 69 yards down to the two yard line, which he followed up with a two-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was good and South Shelby’s lead was 42-0, which would be the score at halftime.
South Shelby played the JV squad the entire second half. Both teams were held scoreless in the second half.
Unofficially, the Cardinals were led in rushing by Hammond with 229 yards on 11 carries, scoring four touchdowns. Wiseman added 66 yards on four carries, scoring one rushing touchdown.
Moellering completed 2-of-4 passes for 36 yards, both to Wiseman, including a touchdown.
The game against Centralia on Friday, October 13, 2023, begins at 7 p.m.
