The Shelby County Herald emailed questions to North Shelby Superintendent Tinna Croy regarding the new track. Below are Dr. Croy’s responses.
Is there a grant the district is applying for to help pay for the track? If so, what? And is it still available?
We will not be applying for a grant for the first phase of this project which is the track itself. The board will decide what phase two will entail and then we will begin the process of applying for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant. This grant’s deadline is in the fall and the receipt of funds is in January of the following school year. So, if we would have applied for it this fall, we would not have received the funds until January 2025. We only learned of this grant this past January, so we were not able to apply and receive the funds for this first phase if we wanted to complete the project this next summer.
What is the estimated cost of the track?
The original amount was $1,165,000 from Facility Solutions Group (FSG), the company we hired to organize our projects, collect needed survey information and provide contractors to choose from. The final track layout was approved last month so FSG is now sending the project out to contractors for bids. Those will be brought to the board and the board will choose the contractor to move forward with the project.
When will construction begin on the track?
We want to start as soon as the ground thaws in the spring. We understand that with the construction our track team will not be able to use the existing track. But with the condition it is currently in and the fact that it holds water, our athletes are not able to practice much on it anyway. In past years, they have been forced to practice in the halls and around the parking lot. They will continue to do this for this next school year.
Who is doing the work on the track?
The bidding process is currently taking place. The board will choose a contractor as soon as FSG presents them.
When will the track be completed?
It is hard to say at this point but we are hoping by mid-summer.
Additional comments?
We want to thank the community for their patience in this process. We know everyone wants to see progress and sometimes that doesn’t come quick enough. We will keep everyone updated as we get closer to the finished project.
