Lady Birds Defeat Blair Oaks in Moberly Area Community College Shootout

The South Shelby Lady Birds traveled to Moberly Area Community College on Friday, December 29, 2023, to compete in the MACC Shootout against the Blair Oaks Lady Falcons. The Lady Birds won 66-36.
South Shelby fell behind 7-4 early on, but the Lady Birds went on an 8-0 run. Buckets by Belle Roush Callie McWilliams, and Kamryn Mitchell, who also added two free throws, gave the Lady Birds a 12-7 lead with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
Blair Oaks scored to snap the streak, but the Lady Birds would close the quarter out on a 9-0 run. Mitchell hit a three and freshman Reese Maupin added a three as South Shelby led 21-9 after one quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the freshman. Maupin scored nine points, including a three pointer, for the Lady Birds. South Shelby outscored the Lady Falcons 14-11 in the second quarter to lead 35-20 at the half.
Early in the third quarter, Hannah Gaines hit a three to give South Shelby a 40-24 lead. McWilliams hit a bucket, which was followed by consecutive buckets from Belle Roush to give the Lady Birds a 46-24 lead, it’s biggest lead of the game, with 3:51 left in the third quarter.
South Shelby led 52-34 aftter three quarters.
Blair Oaks tried to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Birds had an answer all night.
In the fourth quarter, Charlie Roush scored five points. With the lead cut to 58-44 with less than three minutes to play, South Shelby closed the game on a 8-2 run to win the game 66-46.
Belle Roush led the Lady Birds with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals followed by Maupin with 14 points, including two threes. Mitchell added nine points and McWilliams finished with eight points. Gaines added seven assists.
The Lady Birds, 8-2 overall, will square off against Glasgow in the first round of the Salisbury Tournament on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. With a win, they will play Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
A loss would mean they would play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
