The South Shelby Cardinals lost three games this past week. The Cardinals lost to Centralia in a regular season matchup, followed by losses to Clopton and Knox County in the South Shelby Tournament on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

On Thursday, April 4, the Cardinals hosted the Centralia Panthers and lost 15-1 in five innings on a cold windy night at South Shelby High School.
Centralia scored three runs in the first inning, five runs in the second inning, and seven runs in the final three innings.
South Shelby was held to one hit, a single by Hunter Maubach. He later scored on a wild pitch to score the only run for the Cardinals.
Isaac Wilcox started on the mound for the Cardinals allowing eight runs, four earned runs, on three hits. He walked six batters and struck out two batters. Caleb Scheiterle pitched four and two-thirds of an inning, allowing seven runs, four earned runs, on seven hits. He walked five and struck out three batters.
South Shelby 2
Clopton 9
The Cardinals squared off against Clopton in the first round of the South Shelby Baseball Tournament on Saturday and lost 9-2. South Shelby was considered the visitors on the scoreboard.
The Cardinals jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with two runs. Tucker Elliott led off the game with a walk and later scored on an error by the Clopton third baseman. Wilcox followed with an RBI single to give South Shelby a 2-0 lead.
Clopton tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
South Shelby loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning on singles by Owen Stueve and Payton Hetheriton, and a walk to Maubach, but couldn’t score.
Clopton took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs, and followed up with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Clopton went on to win the game 9-2.
Wilcox led the Cardinals on offense going 4-for-4, including a double, with one RBI.
Elliott started on the mound, pitching six innings, allowing nine runs, seven earned runs on six hits. He walked seven and struck out three batters.
Knox County 14
South Shelby 2
The loss meant the Cardinals would match up with the Knox County Eagles in the third place game and South Shelby lost 14-2 in six innings.
Knox County jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on five walks and no hits.
The Eagles added to its lead in the top of the second inning with five more runs scoring to lead 7-0 heading to the bottom of the second inning.
The Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the second inning when John Schmidt singled and later scored on a double by Gage Timbrook.
Knox County scored three runs in the top of the fifth, then scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab a 14-1 lead.
South Shelby scored its final run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Maubach singled and later scored on an RBI single by Schmidt.
Maubach and Schmidt led the Cardinals with two hits each.
Chase Moellering started on the mound for the Cardinals, pitching one and two-thirds of an inning, allowing seven runs, five earned runs, on one hit. He walked nine and struck out five batters. J Dovin pitched four innings allowing seven runs on six hits, walking five and striking out four batters. Timbrook pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and struck out a batter.
The Cardinals 2-5 overall, 0-1 in the Clarence Cannon Conference, traveled to Paris on Tuesday, April 9, and to Brookfield on Wenesday, April 10. They host Clark County on Thursday, April 11, and host Monroe City on Monday, April 15. All games begin at 5 p.m.
