The South Shelby Cardinals had a busy week with games at Macon and Bevier, then hosting Highland.
South Shelby 2
Macon 12
The Cardinals traveled to Macon on Monday, April 22, 2024, and lost 12-2 in five innings.
South Shelby jumped on the board in the top of the first inning when Owen Stueve walked and later scored on an RBI double by Isaac Wilcox.
Macon tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning, then scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 6-1 lead after two innings.
Tucker Elliott was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the third inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilcox to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Macon scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning and then added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to build the lead to 12-2, which was the final.
South Shelby 1
Bevier 3
The Cardinals traveled to Bevier on Wednesday, April 24, and lost 3-1.
Bevier scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
South Shelby’s lone run came in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles by Wilcox and Chase Moellering.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn’t push any runs across and lost 3-1.
Moellering and Payton Hetheriton each had two hits to lead the Cardinals offense.
Wilcox pitched six innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits, walking three and striking out 11 batters.
Highland 2
South Shelby 3
The Cardinals hosted the Highland Cougars on Thursday, April 25, 2024, and won 3-2.
The Cougars took the lead in the top of the third inning when a walk and two batters were hit by pitches to load the bases. An error allowed Highland to score and take a 1-0 lead.
Highland added another run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Cason Bliven to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the fourth inning, South Shelby began to rally. Wilcox and Moellering each singled with one out. A caught stealing at third on a double steal put a runner at second base with two outs for the Cardinals. J Dovin doubled to centerfield to drive in the first run of the game for South Shelby. John Schmidt followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 after four innings.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wilcox doubled down the right field line to score the go ahead run and give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
Elliott pitched five and two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs, one earned run, on four hits. He walked four and struck out eight batters. Stueve pitched the final one and one-third innings, allowing one walk and striking out three batters.
Wilcox and Schmidt each finished with two hits.
The Cardinals, 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the Clarence Cannon Conference, hosted Mark Twain on Monday, April 29, and hosted Scotland County on Tuesday, April 30. They travel to Palmyra on Thursday, May 2, to LaPlata on Friday, May 3 (at 4:30 p.m.), and will host Northwestern on Tuesday, May 7. All games begin at 5 p.m.
