Cardinals End Regular Season with Loss

The South Shelby Cardinals baseball season came to an end on Wednesday night, May 15, 2024, with an 11-3 loss to the Highland Cougars in the Class 3, District 7 Tournament. The game started at Clark County on Tuesday night but was suspended and resumed at South Shelby High School the following night.
Highland scored three runs in the top of the first inning at Kahoka.
The rain came in the bottom of the first inning which suspended the game. After resuming play the next day at South Shelby, Highland added a run in the top of the second inning on an error and led 4-0.
Highland continued to add to its lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring three runs. They tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to lead 10-0.
South Shelby scored its first runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, both scoring on a dropped third strike and passed ball.
Highland added a run in the top of the seventh inning to take an 11-2 lead.
The Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Owen Stueve. South Shelby loaded the bases, but the game ended on a double play.
Stueve led the Cardinals with one hit and one RBI.
Wilcox pitched six innings, allowing 10 runs, three earned runs, on eight hits. He walked three and struck out seven batters. Tucker Elliott pitched one inning, allowing one unearned run on one hit, while striking out one.
The Cardinals finished the season with a 3-17 overall record.
