The South Shelby Cardinals enter the 2024 season coming off a very successful 2023 campaign in which the Cardinals finished 7-0 in the Clarence Cannon Conference and 10-1 overall.
South Shelby will return 15 lettermen this season, with seven starters returning on offense and defense.
Key returning starters on offense are Junior quarterback Chase Moellering (6’, 170); Senior offensive lineman Kaiden Poole (6’3”, 240); Senior offensive lineman Aadon Magruder (6’, 230); Senior offensive lineman Cooper Elsen (6’1”, 210); Senior wide receiver/runningback Preston Elsen (6’, 175); Senior wide receiver Owen Stueve (6’3”, 175); and Senior tight end Hunter Maubach (6’, 170).
Defensive returning starters are Poole at defensive lineman; Magruder at defensive lineman, Cooper Elsen at outside linebacker; Preston Elsen at defensive back; Stueve at defensive back; Senior defensive back Eli Hatcher (6’2”, 160); and Senior linebacker Gabe Bowen (5’10”, 195).
Top newcomers this year are Senior wide receiver/running back Pryce Eagan (5’10”, 170); sophomore offensive lineman Colt Threlkeld (6’1”, 225); Senior offensive lineman Draden Black (5’10”, 175); and Senior linebacker/running back Dan Timbrook (6’2”, 190).
Head Coach Adam Gunterman said the offense will run pistol power.
“Our strengths start up front returning some key players that know the offense,” said Coach Gunterman. “Returning Chase as our quarterback after a great sophomore season to continue to run the offense and the more reps he gets the more on the same page we are.”
Gunterman added the Cardinals are going to have speed in a lot of places this year.
Defensively, the Cardinals will mostly use a 3-4 defense, but will have multiple looks.
“We return all of our statistical leaders on defense,” stated Gunterman. “This will be a defense that have played a lot of snaps together and know their jobs well.”
“We need to continue to get better not only as players but as people and leaders,” said Gunterman. “The sky could be the limit if we do the little details all the time.”
South Shelby will host Westran, Clark County, North Platte, Centralia, and Palmyra. The Cardinals will travel to Harrisburg, Monroe City, Highland, and Macon.
