South Shelby welcomes its first year of girls golf. There are 14 Lady Birds on the team. Eight freshmen and six upperclassmen.
Head Coach Caitlyn Poore said the support they have received from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
“People are excited for South Shelby Girls Golf! I think this is a sport our girls could have success in and is a great addition to South Shelby Athletics,” said Coach Poore.
Poore has several years of experience coaching, but this is her first year of coaching golf.
“I personally starting golfing for fun after high school and participate in league nights at Shelbina Lakeside Golf Course,” Poore said. “I am fortunate to have my Dad, Michael Poore, as my assistant as he has many years of experience with the game.”
The district pays for the girls’ membership and they’re allowed to golf over the summer whenever they want.
Coach Poore said the girls have made her job easier as many of the athletes have taken the initiative to play over the summer and improve on their own. There have been many practices that have included certain aspects of the game including the fundamentals of the golf swing, rules and course etiquette.
Most meets Coach Poore will take five girls for varisty and five for JV.
