The South Shelby Cardinals hosted the Westran Hornets on Friday, September 6, 2024, at South Shelby High School and cruised to an easy 62-0 victory.
The Cardinals received the ball first to start the game and took four plays to score. Gabe Bowen rushed for 22 yards on a touchdown run. The two-point conversion run by Preston Elsen was good and the Cardinals led 8-0 with 10:44 in the first quarter.
Westran punted on its next possession.
South Shelby took over on its own 17-yard line and drove down the field and scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chase Moellering to wide receiver Owen Stueve. The two-point conversion failed and the Cardinals led 14-0 with 5:56 left in the opening quarter.
The Hornets were forced to punt and South Shelby started its next drive on its own 13-yard line.
The Cardinals opened the drive with a 25-yard pass completion to wide receiver Tucker Elliott. A few plays later, Pryce Eagan broke loose on a 52-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed and the Cardinals led 20-0 late in the first quarter.
A Westran punt gave the Cardinals another opportunity to build on the lead. A six play drive ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Moellering. The two-point conversion run by Bowen was good and the Cardinals led 28-0 with 10:59 left in the first half.
The Hornets punted on its next possession and the Cardinals scored once again on a eight-play drive, capped off by a eight-yard touchdown run by Bowen. The extra point kick was no good and the Cardinals led 34-0 with 5:44 left in the second quarter.
Westran’s next possession ended in three plays when the the pass was deflected and intercepted by Draden Black at the South Shelby 47-yard line.
A two play drive, runs of 30 and 23, both by Elsen resulted in another touchdown. The extra point kick failed and the Cardinals led 40-0 with 3:58 left in the first half.
Westran marched down the field but turned the ball over on downs at the South Shelby 39 yard line.
After a five yard penalty pushed the ball back five yards, Moellering completed a 41-yard pass to Stueve down to the 25-yard line. Three plays later, Moellering connected with Stueve again for a 21-yard touchdown pass with four seconds left in the half. The extra point kick by Pedro Romanichen was good and the Cardinals led 47-0, which would be the halftime score.
The Cardinals recovered a fumble on the Westran nine yard line late in the third quarter. Payton Hetheriton scored on a nine-yard touchdown run on the next play. The extra point kick was good by Romanichen and the lead was 53-0 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.
Jace McWilliams added a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The extra point kick was good by Romanichen and the lead was 60-0 with 4:59 left to play.
The final two points came on a safety by the Cardinals defense late in the game as South Shelby won the game 62-0.
Elsen led the Cardinals in rushing with 109 yards and one touchdown on six carries. Eagan had 77 yards and a touchdown on three carries, while Bowen finished with 59 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.
Moellering completed 7-of-9 passes for 146 yards, including two touchdown passes.
Stueve caught three passes, including two touchdown passes, for 82 yards.
The Cardinals, 2-0 overall, travel to Monroe City on Friday, September 20, beginning at 7 p.m.
