The Shelby County R-IV School Board met in regular session on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, in the middle school library.
Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Dr. Billy Daleske presented reports on the financial report and the CSIP- Cross Reference Update.
Principal’s Report
Elementary Principal Katie Stueve reported they have had two Monday Academies so far this year and the numbers have been significantly lower this year. There was a Professional Development Day for certified staff on September 23. Stueve said they focused on their reading block to make sure it was a structured literacy block, addressing all the components of reading which ties to the CSIP. The elementary staff had in-house training addressing the five components of reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension.
Middle School Principal Curt Bowen gave a brief update on Monday Academy. He reported that fall sports is nearly complete and the focus is turning to winter sports, with the first basketball game is scheduled for Novemeber 7. The students participated in Homecoming week which included the game, parade and dress-up days.
High School Principal Tim Maddex spoke about Monday Academy. Maddex said he talked to his high school improvement team. He would like to require a student to have at least a 50% for the semester in a class before the student was allowed to attend summer school as a way to gain high school credit. This past year they had a couple students earn below a 50% in a semester class for lack of effort then use the two weeks of summer school to complete the class online. Maddex said he would make an exemption in this statement in the handbook for a senior that is less than one credit from graduation. He said he would rather see the student retake the course with a teacher and have to complete the work during the school year. He feels like this would increase student accountability.
He met with his Principal Advisory Committee, which consists of the President and Vice President of each class, earlier in the day with OPAA. They talked about adding some diversity in the menu. The kids were able to tell the director what they would like to see on the menu. Maddex said a survey was sent out to the students so they could rate what their favorite meals are.
Maddex reported the girl’s golf team finished third in districts earlier in the day and three girls will be attending the state meet at Farmington on October 21 and 22. Sofia Eleazarraraz, Hannah Gaines, and Charlie Roush will be the first golfers to compete in the state tournament on the girl’s side for South Shelby.
Maddex also highlighted the band taking second at the Highland Field Show Competition and Ashley Sievers was awarded the best Drum Major overall.
New Business
Dr. Daleski addressed the board about inviting Bowling Green to the Clarence Cannon Conference. He said since Brookfield dropped out of the conference, it left the conference at seven teams.
“The conference Athletic Directors got together and proposed to the superintendents that we consider taking to the boards of education to consider adding Bowling Green,” said Dr. Daleski. “They’re basically looking for an eighth team to help build the conference and even out the scheduling.”
He said some of the talking points were that demographics and school size make Bowling Green a good fit. He said they also have a good fine arts program that could help bolster the conference.
The school boards from each school in the conference will vote, and it would take two-thirds of the conference schools to vote to invite Bowling Green. Bowling Green would then have to decide whether to accept the invite or not.
Several board members brought up concerns about inviting Bowling Green into the conference, including from a competition standpoint in sports. After some discussion by the board, a motion was made to invite Bowling Green to the CCC. The motion passed 6-1, with Stewart Hatcher voting against it.
