April 1, 1925
The largest class in the history of the Shelbyville High School will receive diplomas at the close of the present term in May. There are 37 graduates, 20 of whom are girls. A 50-50 class, 11 boys and 11 girls will be graduating from Leonard High School, nine girls and three boys, will graduate from Bethel High School.
The main building of the Chillicothe Business College was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning at an estimated loss of $200,000. The blaze was not discovered until well underway and it was impossible to save the large building that housed the commercial, typewriting and telegraphy departments.
A program given by Misses Lucile and Elizabeth Speer will be heard tomorrow beginning at 8:30 p.m. from station KFNF, sponsored by the Henry Field Seed Company, Shenandoah, Iowa. The misses Speer are daughters of Rev. E. J. Speer, formerly a minister in Shelbyville.
All the signs of Spring were visible. Some have planted gardens, and most have their potatoes planted. Greens, lettuce and winter onions are coming to the rescue.
Weldon Gwynn while assisting in breaking a span of young mules, received a fractured wrist. The accident happened last week. Weldon is back at work again after a few days in the repair shop. It takes more than a mule to put Weldon out of business, at least it did this time.
Homecoming Days begin Saturday, April 4. $50 in cash will be given away each Saturday. Every Saturday will be a big day in Shelbyville. The highlight of the series will be the big Homecoming Day, Saturday, June 27 when $200 will be given away.
At a mass meeting of citizens held in Shelbina Monday night of last week a vote of 6 to 1 was recorded in favor of a proposition to finance a bond issue of $35,000 to build a cast iron pipeline from the settling basin to Salt River. The present pipeline, that furnishes water to Shelbina and is 90 percent wood, has developed leaks and is causing mudholes in the road.

Lewis Decamp, near Shelbyville, has been chosen as the sophomore from the local high school to represent the class in the annual Sophomore Pilgrimage to Jefferson City April 14. The student is chosen by the class on a good citizenship basis, scholastic standing, school loyalty and courtesy are taken into consideration. The trip is sponsored by the Shelbyville Woman’s Club.
Frank McKillip, Shelbyville, dug a total of 13 fox pups out of a pond dam near his place on Friday and Saturday last week. He said traps were being set for the old foxes.
Earl Todd filed as a candidate for the office of presiding judge of the Shelby County Court Tuesday. He is at present the judge of the Western District. E. L. Seaman has also filed for the post. E. C. Erwin and Bol E. Chinn, have filed for the two district offices. Virgil J. Todd has announced his candidacy for re-election to the office of Clerk of the County Court.
“Twelve O’Clock High” starring Gregory Peck, “Blondie’s Hero” with Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake, “Christopher Columbus” starring Frederic March, and “Scatterbrain” with Judy Canova,” are coming attractions at the Clark Theatre, Shelbina.
All babies born during the first three months of 1950 will be enumerated on two different forms when the Census of Population is conducted in April. They will be counted only once in the population, however.
In compliance with Sec. 10470, R. S. 1939, notice is hereby given to the qualified voters of the School District of Shelbyville, that the annual election of said district will be held at Shelbyville, Tuesday, the 4th day of April 1950, beginning at 7 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m.
The sum of $88,404 was spent for road maintenance in Shelby County last year as compared with $41,883 10 years ago. Shelby County state highway maintenance costs have gone up at an appalling rate over the past 10 years. Although maintenance costs have
increased to a tremendously large amount, the department is still endeavoring to hold down these expenditures as low as possible to save funds for road construction.

Winter returned here Monday night after a period of warm spring weather with temperatures reaching a high of 78 degrees during the weekend. The cold wave entered the community accompanied by a hailstorm with hail measuring as large as 1 1/2 inches across. The hail was accompanied by a heavy rain.
On February 19, Coach Tresia Griffith informed Theresa Steffen, a 5’ 7” senior from North Shelby, that she was honored with a position on the first team Tri-Rivers All-Conference. Theresa was also named to the Missouri Class 1-A All-District basketball team. Within a week, Coach Griffith congratulated Theresa for being announced a first team All-State choice.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Weldon Glen Allison sawmill located 10 miles northeast of Shelbyville. The fire was reported about 9:30 a.m. Monday, March

Two members of the John Wood Community College Trail Blazers basketball team, Ronnie Ross and Shelby Tonnies, have been named to the All-Region 24 Team. Tonnies, a 6’ 9” center, averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game. He is a sophomore and is from Shelbyville.
The Shelbina Fifth Grade boys won medals at the Leonard fifth and sixth grade basketball tournament. Members were Grant Bowling, Scott Utterback, Cy McConnell, Ryan Kendrick, Aaron O’Laughlin, Karson Smith, Zach Bowman, Ty Gough, Caleb Dodd, Cameron Smith and Cody Wise.
The North Shelby Sixth Grade girls won medals at the Leonard fifth and sixth grade basketball tournament. Members were Mary Turner, Hillary Allen, Allison Peoples, Haley Caldwell, LaNise Bichsel, Britney Gander, Kayla Davis, Emily Hudson, Emma Werr, Mindy Parshall, Courtney Stewart, Stephanie Bue, and Randi Willey.
The Shelbina Sixth Grade girls won medals at the Leonard fifth and sixth grade basketball tournament. Members were Jaimee O’Laughlin, Erika Carte, Mallory Greenwell, Hillary Black, Kelsey Wise, Alisha Bragg, Haley Woutzke, Monica Hatcher, Regan Thomas, Rachel Moore, and Whitney Barnes.
The Shelbina Sixth Grade boys won medals at the Leonard fifth and sixth grade basketball tournament. Members were Tony Hall, Cameron Buckman, Curtis Kendrick, Mike Hickman, Kevin Magruder, Corey Smith, Russell Heathman, Gregory Rakestraw, Chad Carroll, and Ryan Dimmitt.
