There are some really funny commercials on TV made by Cheez-It. In these commercials there is a wheel of cheese and a man in a lab coat there to test the cheese and see if it is mature enough to make into Cheez-Its. One of the commercials shows the wheel of cheese telling corny jokes and the man marks the paper on his clipboard labeled “Not Ready.” At the end the cheese is talking about investments, and the man marks the box “Ready”.
I have been like this wheel of cheese. There have been times in my life when I was too immature to accept the blessings God had in store for me. Looking back, I’m thankful that God waited until I was mature enough to accept them. Otherwise, I might have let them pass me by. God’s timing is perfect. He knows when we are spiritually ready to accept His blessings and to do the work to further His kingdom. Hebrews 5:13-14 says, “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Becoming a mature Christian takes time, and training. Spending time with the Lord in prayer, reading and studying His word will help us mature.
One of the things that keeps us from becoming spiritually mature is pride. We often refuse to see our own faults. If we can’t see them, then we will never allow ourselves to be convicted. Conviction happens when we truly look inside and see our own sinful ways. That is the only way that God can begin to work in us and repair them. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. In 1 John 1:9-10 it says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” When we confess our sins to the Lord and repent for them, then the Lord can begin to do His work in us. Only then can we grow and mature into who He created us to be. Are you ready?
