South Shelby Lady Birds Golf Team Looking to Build off Last Season’s Success

By Mark Requet

The South Shelby Lady Birds Golf team will enter its second season with a little more experience after the program debuted last season.

Head Coach Caitlyn Poore said the team will have experience on its side this year.

“The girls have improved tremendously since last season,” said Poore. “They are just more comfortable with the game and their swings this year.”

The Lady Birds will have three returning seniors and five sophomores who played last season.

Several of the key returners are senior Hannah Gaines, who was all-conference last year as well as a state qualifier; senior Charlie Roush, who was a state qualifier; and senior Katelyn Wilt, who logged some impressive scores last season.

Poore mentioned junior Kylee Barton and freshmen Shelby Rickerson and Emma Eagan as several top newcomers to the program this year.

“We have 12 girls on the roster so we will have enough for a full Varsity and JV team,” added Poore.

Poore is hoping to build off of last year’s success.

“Last year was the first year for the program. We had great success despite most of the girls never having played before,” said Poore. “This year we are looking to use that momentum and a year of experience to generate more success.”

The Lady Birds open the season on Friday, August 29, with a quad meet at Westran. South Shelby will host the South Shelby Scramble on September 18, and the South Shelby Tri Meet #2 on September 25.
