The South Shelby Cardinals traveled to Wright City on Friday, October 3, 2025, and lost to the wildcats 41-16.
The Cardinals kicked off and on the first play from scrimmage, Wright City ran a sweep play and ran 57 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was good, and the Cardinals trailed 7-0 with only 14 seconds ticking off the clock.
South Shelby started its first possession on the Wildcats 43-yard line. Five run plays helped the Cardinals find the endzone when Logan Hubbard ran it in for a touchdown. The two-point conversion run was good and the Cardinals led 8-7 with 8:56 left in the first quarter.
Wright City regained the lead late in the first quarter to take a 13-8 lead with 1:42 left.
On South Shelby’s next possession, starting at its own 20-yard line, Hudson Gill broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was good, and the Cardinals led 16-13 with 1:30 left in the the first quarter.
The Wildcats regained the lead with a touchdown late in the second quarter. The two-point conversion was good, and the Cardinals trailed 21-16 with 6:07 left in the first half.
An interception on South Shelby’s next possession allowed the Wildcats to return it to the five-yard line. Wright City scored on the next play to take a 27-16 lead, which would be the halftime score.
South Shelby’s offense was stymied in the second half as they were kept off the scoreboard. Wright City scored twice in the third quarter to take a commanding lead and went on to win the game 41-16.
The Cardinals were led on offense by Gill who rushed for 124 yards, including a touchdown, on 10 carries. Stats are unofficial.
The Cardinals, 1-5 overall, travel to Centralia on Friday, October 10.
