The Department of Economic Development (DED) announced last week that it has awarded a total of $30 million through the Local Tourism Asset Development Grant Program for 26 projects across the state. The program, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), is focused on supporting projects that further the recovery of the tourism, travel, and hospitality industries. Maples Repertory Theatre in Macon has been named as one of the recipients. The grant details $250,000 in matching funds for the expansion of Maples Repertory Theatre’s physical operations and continued renovation of the historic Royal Theatre.
“We are really excited to use this money to renovate two vacant downtown buildings into production spaces for the theatre” said Todd Davison, Maples Rep Artistic Director. “ We will move our scene shop out of the basement of the Royal Theatre and into a much more functional space. We will also develop a new headquarters for our Theatre Education department and get a second performance venue in the deal. Our task now is to raise $250,000 in matching funds to allow us to access this grant. It gives our partners the chance to double their gift and make a huge impact on our organization and community.
This news comes just as the theatre is ramping up into its 20th Anniversary Season, featuring BIG RIVER: THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN, DRIVING MISS DAISY, AMMA MIA!, THE CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, and SORRY! WRONG CHIMNEY.
