The South Shelby Cardinals won third place in the Salisbury Tournament on Saturday, January 6, 2024. They defeated Meadville, lost to Salisbury and defeated Cairo in the third place game.

The Cardinals dropped into the third place game and won 59-46 over the Cairo Bearcats in the Salisbury Tournament on Saturday, January 6.
Both teams traded baskets early on in the first quarter, but the Cardinals held an 11-10 lead after Gabe Bowen hit a three with 10 seconds left in the quarter.
A bucket by Bowen and a three by Jaaron Durbin gave the Cardinals a 16-10 lead with 6:03 left in the second quarter.
Cairo would battle back and tie the game at 19-19, but Noah Wilt’s bucket gave the Cardinals a 21-19 lead with 2:33 left in the first half. The Cardinals finished the half on an 8-2 run and led 28-21 at the half.
Pryce Eagan scored nine of the 13 points in the third quarter for the Cardinals, including a three pointer, to help South Shelby lead 41-35 after three quarters.
The Cardinals outscored the Bearcats 18-11 in the fourth quarter. Cairo pulled to within six points, but South Shelby continued to pull away, led by Preston Elsen’s six fourth quarter points, and won 59-46.
Eagan led the Cardinals with 15 points. Elsen scored 14 points and had four steals. Chance Rainey finished with nine points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Cardinals, 6-8 overall, traveled to Van-Far on Tuesday night. They are scheduled to host Louisiana on Thursday, January 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m. South Shelby will compete in the North Shelby Tournament next week. See the bracket for details.
Salisbury 65

The Cardinals advanced to square off against the top seeded Salisbury Panthers, who coasted to a 65-29 win over South Shelby.
The Cardinals were outscored 20-2 in the second quarter as Salisbury led 37-13 at the half.
A 22-11 outburst in the third quarter gave the Panthers a 59-23 lead after three quarters.
Salisbury cruised to the 65-29 win.
Eagan led the Cardinals with six points, followed by Rainey with five points.
Cardinals 49
Meadville 33
The Cardinals defeated Meadville 49-33 in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday, January 2.
Meadville jumped out to an early 13-7 lead in the first quarter, but a 4-0 run by the Cardinals to end the quarter cut the lead to 13-11 after one.
In the second quarter, the Cardinals used an 11-0 run to take a 25-14 lead midway through. South Shelby outscored Meadville 16-5 in the second quarter to take a 27-18 lead at halftime.
Both teams continued to trade baskets in the third quarter, as the Cardinals continued to maintain a comfortable lead after three quarters, 43-31.
South Shelby finished off the win with a 6-2 advantage in the fourth quarter to win 49-33.
Rainey led the Cardinals with 15 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Mason Pfannenstiel added 11 points and Wilt finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
