The South Shelby Cardinals opened the Class 3, District 6 Tournament against the Mark Twain Tigers and won 70-38 on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, to advance to the semi-final game against Monroe City.
Mark Twain scored the first points of the game and led 4-0, but the Cardinals responded with 21 straight points to close out the first quarter and led 21-4. Pryce Eagan scored seven points in the opening quarter, including a three. Chance Rainey added six points.
The scoring run continued in the second quarter as buckets by Rainey and Preston Elsen stretched the scoring run to 25 unanswered points.
A 14-4 run, capped by a bucket from Noah Wilt, gave the Cardinals a 39-8 lead with 2:32 left in the first half. South Shelby led 46-17 at the half.
South Shelby outscored the Tigers 24-15 in the second half to win 70-32.
Eagan, Wilt, and Bowen each led the Cardinals in scoring with 12 points. Rainey added 10 points.
