Our granddaughter is 3 years old, and everyday she is learning something new. It is just amazing to me how fast kids learn at that age. At each milestone I am so excited and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next. Children go from being an infant and living on milk to eating solid foods. They go from gurgling and babbling to speaking in full sentences in no time at all.
When we are new Christians, we are just learning what the Lord wants from us, but as we mature there are higher expectations for us. If we look at 1Peter 2:1-3 it says, “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” As babies, we live on milk, but as we mature, we progress to solid foods. It is the same way with our spiritual journey. As we mature as Christians, we are to use what we have learned and the relationship we have with the Lord to help others find their way to Him.
In the book of Hebrews, the writer is speaking to a group of mature Christians when he says, ”In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Are we mature? Are we constantly learning about the Lord so that we can become teachers of the word or are we content to continue to be infants in our faith? The Lord wants us to go and make disciples, but we can’t do that if we are still drinking milk and haven’t progressed to solid foods yet. I wonder if God is up there cheering us on at each milestone. Does he get as excited as I do when my granddaughter accomplishes something new? I’m sure God gets excited when we plant seeds in others – when we become disciples making disciples. I’m sure He is ready for us to grow up!
